SEPARATION ANXIETY — YOUR DOG NEEDS STRUCTURE, NOT JUST COMFORT
True separation anxiety is one of the most challenging behavior problems to address. It requires a systematic, structured approach — not more reassurance, more toys, or more time together.
WHY THIS HAPPENS
Separation anxiety develops when a dog becomes overly dependent on its owner's presence and cannot cope with being alone. It is often inadvertently created by owners who are always home, who give the dog constant attention, or who make departures and arrivals highly emotional events. The dog learns that being alone is abnormal and distressing.
WHY IT GETS WORSE
Separation anxiety escalates when owners respond to the dog's distress by returning home, giving comfort, or changing their routine to accommodate the dog. Every time the owner returns to a distressed dog, the dog learns that its anxiety response works. Over time, the anxiety intensifies, the dog's threshold for being alone decreases, and the behavior becomes more severe.
COMMON MISTAKES OWNERS MAKE
Giving the dog excessive attention before leaving — this heightens the contrast between your presence and absence
Making departures and arrivals emotional events — calm, matter-of-fact departures and arrivals reduce anxiety
Getting another dog to "keep the first dog company" — this often creates two anxious dogs
Punishing the dog for destructive behavior caused by anxiety — the dog cannot control its anxiety response
Using medication without behavioral intervention — medication alone does not address the underlying behavior
Attempting to address severe separation anxiety without professional guidance
HOW WE FIX SEPARATION ANXIETY
We address separation anxiety through a systematic desensitization protocol combined with a structured obedience foundation. The dog learns to be calm and independent through gradual exposure to alone time, clear structure, and an owner who communicates calm confidence rather than anxiety. Every case is assessed individually before a protocol is developed.
GET STARTEDOUR METHODOLOGY
Structure is the foundation. A dog with a strong "place" command, solid crate training, and a clear daily routine is significantly less likely to develop or maintain separation anxiety. We build that foundation and then systematically build the dog's tolerance for being alone through a structured desensitization protocol.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does my dog have separation anxiety or is it just bored?
True separation anxiety involves distress specifically triggered by the owner's absence. Boredom-related destruction happens regardless of whether the owner is home. An evaluation will determine which applies to your dog.
Can separation anxiety be cured?
Many dogs with separation anxiety can be significantly improved with the right training and management. "Cured" is a strong word — the goal is a dog that can cope with being alone without distress.
Should I get another dog to help with separation anxiety?
Generally no. A second dog does not address the underlying anxiety and often creates two anxious dogs. Address the behavior in the existing dog first.
Can you fix separation anxiety in a Board & Train?
Board & Train can be part of the solution — it builds structure, independence, and coping skills. However, separation anxiety also requires work at home. We provide owner coaching as part of every program.
How long does it take to address separation anxiety?
It depends on the severity. Mild cases can show improvement within 4–6 weeks. Severe cases may take several months of consistent work. An evaluation will give you a realistic timeline.
