BASIC OBEDIENCE — THE FOUNDATION EVERY DOG NEEDS
Sit, down, stay, heel, place, and recall. These are not tricks — they are the foundation of a dog you can trust in any environment. Every behavior problem is easier to solve when the dog has a solid obedience foundation.
WHY THIS HAPPENS
Most dogs lack basic obedience because it was never properly taught. Owners assume dogs understand commands because they respond sometimes — but inconsistent responses mean the dog has not truly learned the behavior. Real obedience means the dog responds reliably, in any environment, regardless of distractions.
WHY IT GETS WORSE
Without a solid obedience foundation, every other behavior problem becomes harder to address. A dog that does not have a reliable sit, down, or place command cannot be managed in challenging situations. Behavior problems that could be addressed through obedience — jumping, pulling, reactivity — become entrenched because the owner has no tools to redirect the dog.
COMMON MISTAKES OWNERS MAKE
Practicing commands only at home in low-distraction environments — the dog learns the command but not the concept
Repeating commands multiple times before the dog responds — this teaches the dog that the first command is optional
Using food as a bribe rather than a reward — the dog only responds when it can see the food
Inconsistent expectations — sometimes requiring the command, sometimes letting it slide
Not proofing commands in real-world environments — the dog responds in the kitchen but not at the park
Assuming the dog "knows" a command because it works sometimes — reliability requires systematic training
HOW WE FIX BASIC OBEDIENCE
We build a solid obedience foundation through structured, systematic training — teaching each command correctly, building duration and distance, and proofing in real-world environments. The goal is a dog that responds reliably to every command, in any environment, regardless of distractions.
GET STARTEDOUR METHODOLOGY
Clear communication, consistent expectations, and real-world proofing. We teach each command correctly from the start, build the behavior through repetition, and proof it in the environments where you actually need it. Owner coaching ensures the results hold at home.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What commands should every dog know?
At minimum: sit, down, stay, heel, place, and recall. These six commands give you the tools to manage your dog in virtually any situation.
My dog knows the commands at home but not in public. Why?
This is a proofing problem. The dog has learned the command in one context but has not generalized it to other environments. Real obedience requires systematic proofing in a variety of locations and distraction levels.
What is the best age to start obedience training?
As early as possible — puppies can start basic obedience at 8 weeks. That said, dogs of any age can learn. It is never too late to build a solid obedience foundation.
Can you build basic obedience in a Board & Train?
Yes. Basic obedience is the foundation of every Board & Train program. Your dog will return home with reliable commands that have been proofed in real-world environments.
How long does basic obedience training take?
A solid foundation can be built in 2–4 weeks. Full proofing in high-distraction environments takes longer. Consistency and ongoing practice are essential.
